Vryburg

This section examines the political and economic history of Vryburg and the context in which the early Jewish immigrants found themselves.

Situated between German South-West Africa, the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), and the Kimberley Diamond Fields, it is not surprising that many of the early settlers came from Germany and Holland. As South Africa increasingly attracted Jews from areas under Russian Czarist rule, the makeup of the Jewish community changed. Therefore, this section aims to give readers an understanding of who the Jewish pioneers were and where these immigrants originated.

It may be hard to imagine, but in its early days, Vryburg was an important town. Understanding its significance and economy helps explain why people moved here. Additionally, some of the Jewish newcomers played notable roles in local politics and society. These contributions are also discussed in this section.
