Guites
The surname on this tomb (Gates) is incorrect. Louis Guites was a local tailor and married. He passed away in 1925. We do not know the name of his wife and whether they had children. He passed away in Johannesburg and was buried in Bloemhof. Louis was the son of Jacob Guites - a Polish Jew who passed away in Middleburg in the Cape in 1909, where he was a general dealer. He was thrice married: his first wife Pauline passed away in 1885 and was buried in Kimberley. His second wife died in Brisk (Brest Litovsk) in present-day Belarus. This would suggest that he went back to Europe. His married his third wife Catherine (Katharina) Propf in 1886. Louis was the only son from the first marriage. Louis had a brother Joe, from his father's second marriage. His father's third marriage produced three children: Jacob, Rosie and Esther.
Guites seems to have had scant success in business and tried his hand at being a general dealer a few times until a year before his death.
