Blumgart
Isadore Blumgart and Hannah Annie (Solomon) were among the earliest Jewish families in Vryburg. The couple married in Kimberley in 1898.
Annie was from Kimberley. Her father was Israel Solomon (1845-1918), who was a tailor by profession, and her mother was Leah Rachel (1850-1896). Both are buried in the Kimberley Jewish Cemetery. Because her brother Jack was born in the USA in 1872, they likely left Russia for the USA and then for Birmingham, England (where Hannah Annie was born in 1877), and then on to South Africa. Annie was the third eldest of four siblings: Jack, Rose, who married Phineas Strawbaum, and Gertude Marion (Gertie), who married Herbert Sidney Montague.
Isadore Blumgart was from Harburg, Bavaria. He was the second youngest of six children born to Bernhard Laemle Blumgart (1819-1900) and Sarah Waldmann (1821-1890). His five siblings - Louis (1845-1931), Wilhelm (1846-1928), David (1849-1923), and Helene (1854-1931) moved to America. Isadore (1850) passed away in 1924 in Bloemfontein. Annie passed away in 1964 and was buried in Pretoria.
From his naturalization application (8 October 1908), we learn a great deal about him. He had spent a long period in Vryburg from September 1891 to July 1907 before moving to Kimberley. His listed occupation was commissioning agent. In Vryburg, he was a shopkeeper and hotelier. After the Boer War, he was accused by the authorities of selling to the Boers during the conflict. Isidore reportedly sold goods to General de la Rey.
Prior to arriving in South Africa, Isadore and his brother David traveled to the United States in 1869. David Blumgart was naturalized in 1876. His brother Ludwig was the witness. Ludwig, who was naturalized in 1873, arrived in America in 1868. Ludwig married Rosa Blumgart - who was born in Baltimore.
Hannah Annie and Isadore had four children: Cecil Leonard Bernard (born January 21, 1899), Harold Herman (born October 4, 1901), Marion (born May 17, 1905) and Norman Leslie (1909-1918). Norman Leslie passed away in Kimberley in 1918 - the listed cause of death was Enteritis. The first three were born in Vryburg. Cecil married Rhoda Rosenblatt (also born in Vryburg) in 1927 and later lived in Vryburg. He was a farmer.
