The Vryburg Families
Background and Methodology
As I became more involved in this project, I realized the importance of researching the families I encountered. I created a sort of album, profiling specific families. The albums are organized alphabetically.
The Jewish Life in the South African Country Communities study provides a list of Vruburg names; however, it is neither accurate, comprehensive, nor detailed. I aimed to enhance this important effort and add some context. The valuable material preserved by Graham Brodovcky and Anney Garnett’s review of local newspapers contributed many more names.
I also found myself with photos, documents, and other materials that I could utilize for this purpose. In total, approximately seventy families or individuals were profiled. I highlighted families who stayed for a long period and contributed to the community and region. Sometimes, it was opportunistic.
