Joffe, Sam and Amelia

Amelia (also spelled Emelia) Lemkus first married Harry Herman Garb in 1919. The Garb family is from Plungyan, now called Plunge, and Harry was the son of Moshe and Frieda Rosa. Amelia was born in Talsen and later moved to Vryburg with her father Moses and his family. The Lemkus family later migrated to the Free State. Harry and Amelia signed their antenuptial contract in Kopjes, in the Free State.

The couple settled in Delareyville and farmed in the Lichtenburg district and near Delareyville. They also owned a local store. Harry Garb passed away in 1944, and in 1947, Amelia re-married Sam Joffe (Shlomo Ben Eliyahu). The two farmed outside of Delareyville and managed a local store. As the community in Vryburg declined, Sam and Amelia joined local services and became part of the community. The couple never had children, and both are buried in Vryburg.

The photos were shared with me by Maxie Garb who adopted me on Kibbutz Tzora when I made Aliyah. Also living on Tzorah are Avi Hechter and Selma van Gelderen.
