Hummel
Jacob (Jack) Hummel and his wife Jessie moved to Vryburg and were very involved in the local Jewish community. The family arrived in Vryburg around 1959 or 1960. Jack worked for Solomon's Stores and passed away in 1964, leaving behind his wife and two daughters. After Jack's death, Jessie and her daughters moved to Johannesburg. Jack is buried in the local Jewish cemetery. Jessie passed away in 1993 and is buried in Westpark Cemetery. Jessie had a daughter, Ruth, from her first marriage, and together they had a daughter, Hermione (Hermie).
Jacob Hummel was the son of Herman and Esther (nee Moritz) Hummel. Herman's family was from Talsen in Latvia. Herman Hummel's parents were Wulf and Sheina (Wolfson). They had ten children; Herman was the eldest, and he was joined in South Africa by three or four siblings. They settled in SWA and Upington, playing a semi-active role in the Upington community.
Esther Moritz was the daughter of Taube and Jack Moritz. Jack was from Ponevez in Lithuania. Herman and Esther had two children: a daughter Sadie Leah, born in 1917, and Jack, born in 1920 in Muizenberg. Esther passed away in 1935 when Jack was 15. In 1947, he lost his father.
