Greenberg

Little is known about how long Herman (Heshel ben Zalman) Greenberg and his wife Bertie (nee Linde) spent in Vryburg. The earliest reference is 1925. From Herman’s death certificate we glean that we was a Hotelkeeper and speculator residing in Vryburg. We know from the death certificate of Ludwig Hammerschlag in 1928, that Herman Greenberg was managing the Savoy Hotel (the International). Based on liquor license board reports, Herman Greenberg and his partner Abraham Blashker bought the Savoy's bottle store in 1925. A year later, Herman continued alone. When he passed away he had no immovable property and he had already sold the Hotel to Moses Cohen. Hence, we assume he was forced to sell and continued to manage the Hotel as an employer. From interactions with his descendants it appears he was a hotelier in Kimberley before coming to Vryburg. He died whilst in Uniondale in December 1929. At the time he was staying with his in-laws. His wife Bertha (Bertie) was the daughter of Louis Linde and Chai Chesne. Chaia Chesne was the daughter Nathan Slom and Dora Feigeh Slom (nee Meluick). They were married in Srednik (now Seredzius) - Kovno and settled in Uniondale. Less is known about Herman Greenberg’s origins. He was born in Lithaunia. We also know that Herman and his wife had two daughters, Felicia Daphne (born in 1924) and Eleanor (born in 1928 in Kimberley). From their descendants we know that the two were raised in Uniondale after their father died.
