Getz
Dr. Marcus Getz was the eldest of five children born to Louis Getz and Thekla Tauba Getz (nee Rubin). They were married in 1905. Thekla's father, Benzel Rubin, was born in Brisk. Thekla's sister, Mazal/Martha, was born in Riga.
The Getz family also appears to be from Latvia. Marcus’s siblings included Lena, who married a Dogon; Sara, who married a Meskin; Harry Louis; and Eddie, who changed his surname to Gaye.
Marcus married Mathilda (Tilly) Satisky, the daughter of Max and Bertha Satisky. They were married in Vryburg in 1931 by Rabbi Slonim. Bertha is buried in Vryburg cemetery, having passed away in 1945. She was a widower living with the family. Max Satisky died in 1936 at age 76. In 1918, Bertha’s brother Arthur died at age 18. This may explain why Marcus and Tilly named their son Arthur. Arthur, the firstborn, was born in Vryburg in 1931. Their daughter Lynette was also born in Vryburg in 1939. Many years later, Arthur Getz married Bernice Traub, the daughter of Eli Traub, who was in Worcester and did his articles in Vryburg in the 1920s. Lynette married Jacob Koenigsfest.
Dr. Getz was a well-respected and popular general practitioner who studied medicine at UCT, graduating in 1929. He moved to Vryburg after completing his studies. The reason he chose to practice there was that he could buy a practice at a lower cost than similar practices in the city. In addition to being an active member of the local Jewish community, Dr. Getz served on the town council. Dr. and Mrs. Getz left Vryburg for Cape Town in 1955.
