Getz

Dr. Marcus Getz was the oldest of five children born to Louis Getz and Thekla Tauba Getz (nee Rubin). The Rubin family hailed from Riga. The Getz family were also from Lativa it would seem. Marcus’s siblings were Lena (who married a Dogon), Sara (who married a Meskin), Harry Louis and Eddie (who change his surname to Gaye). Marcus married Mathilda (Tilly) Satisky, the daughter of Max and Bertha Satisky. Bertha is buried in Vryburg cemetery after she passed away in 1945. She was a widower who lived with the family. Max Satisky passed away in 1936 aged 76. In 1918 Bertha’s brother, Arthur, passed away at the age of 18 years. This may explain why Marcus and Tilly named their so Arthur. Arthur, the first born, was born in Vryburg in 1931. Their daughter Lynette was also born in Vryburg in 1939. Many years later, Arthur Getz would marry Bernice Traub, the daughter of Eli Traub, then in Worcester, who did his articles in Vryburg in the 1920s.

Dr. Getz was a well-regarded and popular general practitioner who studied medicine at UCT, graduating in 1929. He reached Vryburg after completing his studies. The reason he chose to practice in Vryburg was that he was able to buy a practice at a relative discount to similar practices in the city. Besides being an active member of the local Jewish community. Dr. Getz served on the local town council. Dr. and Mrs. Getz left Vryburg for Cape Town in 1955.
